According to the 2011 New Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject, the University of the Philippines (UP) and the Ateneo de Manila University rank among the top fifty best English-teaching universities around the world. The state-managed University of the Philippines and Jesuit-established Ateneo rank thirty-fourth and thirty-fifth, respectively, of the universities that teach the English language and literature globally. Rounding out the top three are the likes of Ivy League institution Harvard University (number 1), University of Oxford (number 2), and University of Cambridge (number 3). The two esteemed Philippine universities outdid other prestigious international universities such as the United Kingdom’s University of Manchester and the United States’ Georgetown University, Dartmouth College, and Fordham University. Though QS did not provide specific rankings beyond the top 50, other Philippine universities are also recognized as one of the top 150 English-teaching universities worldwide. These include De La Salle University (DLSU), in the 50–100 bracket, and University of Santo Tomas (UST), in the 101–150 bracket. Among Asia’s best English-teaching universities, UP and Ateneo are also the sixth and seventh, respectively. UP and Ateneo are also among the top Asian universities teaching social sciences: UP placed twenty-seventh while Ateneo ranked forty-sixth. Both universities also excelled in the arts and humanities, with UP and Ateneo placing twentieth and twenty-ninth, respectively. Earlier in 2011, QS also revealed the top two hundred universities in Asia. Once again, the country’s four aforementioned universities made the list: UP (number 62), Ateneo (number 65), UST (number 104), and DLSU (107). The QS World University Rankings evaluates universities worldwide depending on factors like citations per faculty member, academic peer review, number of international students and faculty, and student-faculty ratio. Further, QS assesses the universities’ performance in teaching five key subject areas, including (1) arts and humanities, (2) engineering and IT, (3) life sciences and biomedicine, (4) natural sciences, and (5) social sciences.
