“While several offshore nations continue to battle their way into the emerged destination list and despite growing competition, the Philippines holds its ground as one of the more prominent and established outsourcing hubs next to India,” reports the “Top 50 Emerging Global Outsourcing Cities” study done by Global Media, a media platform for the global outsourcing industry, and Tholons, a leading full-service Strategic Advisory firm for Global Outsourcing and Investments, in 2009. Overall, the Philippines ranked second in the Top 5 Offshoring Nations category, with 70 percent of the nation’s six-billion-dollar outsourcing revenue being credited mostly to the English language contact-center industry and its workforce of over 250,000.

Furthermore, the city of Manila, Philippines is the only other Asian capital to make it to the India-dominated Top 8 Global Outsourcing Cities category. Weighing in at Top 3, Manila’s strengths as an ideal outsourcing destination can be attributed mainly to its reliable infrastructure, stable communications, high level of English literacy, and wide knowledge of Western culture.  According to the study, every year, Manila produces 90,000 college graduates “of which 23 percent (about 22,000) are technical graduates while 77 percent (about 75,000) are non-technical graduates.” This makes the Philippines’ capital very versatile with its outsourcing offerings, fully capable of catering to the major players in the contact center industry while likewise highly competent in small-scale back-office processes and niches, such as software development and engineering design, transcription services, and publishing outsourcing such as proofreading and copyediting services.
