10 Book Adaptations Coming in 2020

The past decade was huge when it came to film adaptations that blew the world away. Fans witnessed finales to many sagas, such as Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, and Twilight. Fairy tales, like Aladdin, Cinderella, and Beauty and the Beast, which were once reserved for animations, received the live action treatment. YA favorites Love, Simon; The Fault in Our Stars; and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before took the limelight as well. All in all, it was a good decade for book and film lovers alike.

As the decade starts anew, there seems to be no limit to the well of brilliant adaptations coming to both the big and small screen. Here are only a few worth watching out for.

1. P.S. I Still Love You by Jenny Han

This year’s YA in film is led by the release of To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You. Based on the sequel to Jenny Han’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, P.S. I Still Love You follows Lara Jean and Peter Kavinsky as they navigate their new relationship. As luck would have it, the last recipient of Lara Jean’s love letters, John Ambrose, comes back in her life all of a sudden, causing a sudden flood of emotions in Lara Jean.

2. Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer

After a decade of big-time children’s fantasy adaptations in the likes of Harry Potter and The Chronicles of Narnia, fans of this particular children’s fantasy series need not wait any longer to see this epic story on the big screen. Colfer’s story follows the adventures and misadventures of the eponymous boy genius Artemis Fowl II as he enters a fairy realm.

3. The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

This classic has been retold multiple times in film, television, and theatre and yet remains a beloved story. The Secret Garden comes to life anew in this adaptation by Marc Munden. For those unfamiliar, The Secret Garden follows the exploits of a young orphan named Mary Lennox, who stumbles upon a locked garden while exploring his uncle’s expansive property.

4. China Rich Girlfriend by Kevin Kwan

Following the unprecedented success of Crazy Rich Asians, Kwan’s China Rich Girlfriend is up next on the big screen. The story begins two years after the events of its prequel, where Rachel reunites with her estranged father. Nick’s cousin Astrid also plays a significantly bigger role in this story.

5. All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven

In Niven’s YA romance, Violet Markey and Theodore Finch’s meet is a lot less cute than usual. The two are driven to the edge of their personal existences by survivor’s guilt, mental health problems, and feelings of isolation. However, the weird coincidence of them trying to end their own lives at exactly the same time is precisely what gives them the reason to live.

6. Emma by Jane Austen

The ’90s brought us Clueless, a timeless favorite and modernized adaptation of Jane Austen’s coming-of-age novel. The 2020 version brings us the classic story of Emma Woodhouse, a smart yet misguided girl who meddles in the affairs of those around her.

7. Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie

The great Hercule Poirot returns in this classic by best-selling crime author Agatha Christie. While on holiday in Cairo, Poirot is forced to switch on to detective mode as rumors of a murderer on his boat trip start spreading on deck.

8. The Call of the Wild by Jack London

Dog lovers, this one’s for you. The Call of the Wild takes you on a journey with Buck, a dog taken by force to Alaska to work as a sled dog during the Klondike Gold Rush. The film also stars Harrison Ford as his unlikely human companion.

9. David Copperfield by Charles Dickens

Dickens’s coming-of-age masterpiece will come to the big screen yet again as The Personal History of David Copperfield. The film follows the adventures and friendships of the eponymous David Copperfield from childhood and into middle age.

10. Cursed by Tom Wheeler and Frank Miller

Thirteen Reasons Why breakout star Katherine Langford returns to Netflix in yet another YA story, this time playing Nimue from the Arthurian legends. Cursed reimagines the story of The Lady of the Lake, in which Nimue, instead of King Arthur, gets the sword.
