In case you missed it, the American Psychology Association (APA) released the seventh edition of their style guide in the last quarter of 2019. The latest edition will be used starting the second quarter of this year. Here’s a rundown of the most important updates.

  1. Reference List and Citations

    • No need to add “Retrieved from” before website URLs.
    • No need to indicate the type of e-book cited.
    • For journal DOIs, a doi.org URL replaces the “doi:” prefix.
    • Publication location is not required for books and similar mediums.
    • Up to 20 authors can be listed before placing an ellipsis is necessary.
    • For in-text citations, references with more than three authors can be shortened to the first author plus “et al.”
    • Guidelines and citation examples for newer information sources such as social media messages and other electronic mediums are added.

  2. Punctuation and Layout

    • A single space is to be added after punctuations in the body text, whether or not it is at the end of a sentence.
    • The words “Running head:” need not be prefixed to the running head of a title page. Only the actual title and page number should be used.
    • Calibri size 11pt, Arial 11pt, Lucida Sans Unicode 10pt, and Georgia 11pt have been added along with Times New Roman 12pt as acceptable fonts.
  3. Language

    • Use of “they” or “their” instead of gendered pronouns is accepted.
    • Descriptive phrases are preferred instead of nouns to label people.
