10 Books to Read before the Movie Comes Out in 2018



If you’re looking for some new books to read, then this is the list for you. Books have always been a great source of movies, and 2018 is bound to be a year of great movies and adaptations yet again. Here are only ten of the most highly anticipated page-to-screen adaptations of the year.


  1. The Death Cure by James Dashner
  2. This is the final film in Dashner’s Maze Runner trilogy. In this installment, Thomas breaks his friends out from imprisonment, and together they attempt to take down WCKD, the corporation responsible for their dystopian world. The Death Cure stars Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scoledario, Thomas Brodie-Sangster, Ki Hong Lee, and more. The film was originally set for release in 2017 but was pushed back to give O’Brien time to heal following injuries he sustained while filming. The release date was moved to January 26.

  3. Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter
  4. Potter’s classic children’s tale has been adapted to a live-action/animated film this year. In the film, Peter Rabbit and farmer Mr. McGregor compete to win the affection of an animal lover who plays next door. The film stars Rose Byrne and Domhnall Gleeson and will feature the voices of Sia, Matt Lucas, Daisy Ridley, Margot Robbie, and James Corden as Peter Rabbit. The film is set for release on February 9 in the United States and March 22 in Australia.

  5. Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer
  6. In this novel, four women set out to an Area X on an expedition, the 12th thus far. The area is cut off from the rest of the world, and all the previous expeditions resulted in disappearances, suicides, diseases, and mental trauma. This critically acclaimed novel is the first in the Southern Reach trilogy and stars Natalie Portman. Annihilation is set to be released on February 23.

  7. Every Day by David Levithan
  8. David Levithan’s YA Romantic Drama is about a love story between a sixteen-year-old human girl named Rhiannon and a traveling spirit named A. The novel, told from A’s perspective, is about waking up one day in the body of Rhiannon’s boyfriend, falling in love with her that day, and struggling to meet with her even though they wake up in a different body every day. The film stars Angourie Rice, Justice Smith, Debby Ryan, and Maria Bello and is set for release on February 23.

  9. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle
  10. This adaptation has been highly anticipated ever since its announcement in 2010. A classic in children’s fantasy, A Wrinkle in Time is about a young girl in search of her father after his abduction. The film’s cast includes Storm Reid, Chris Pine, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, and Mindy Kaling and is set for release on March 9.

  11. Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli
  12. Love, Simon is the title of the adaptation of Becky Albertalli’s YA bestseller, Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda. The eponymous Simon is a closeted gay high schooler struggling to balance school, family, his social life, and a boy threatening to reveal his sexuality to the whole school. The film stars Nick Robinson, Katherine Langford, Logan Miller, and Jennifer Garner and will be released on March 16.

  13. Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
  14. Set in 2044, Ready Player One follows the story of a teenager named Wade Watts as he searches for Easter eggs in a virtual reality game to eventually inherit a billionaire fortune. The novel is set in a dystopian future where an energy crisis has led people to live in stacks of trailers to survive. Like the book, the film is an homage to classic ’80s video games and music. The film stars Tye Sheridan as Watts, Olivia Cooke, TJ Miller, Simon Pegg, and Mark Rylance and is directed by Steven Spielberg. Ready Player One is set for release on March 30.

  15. Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan
  16. This novel is told from the perspective of five characters and revolves around the wedding of two Singaporean socialites. According to Kwan, the novel is meant to “introduce a contemporary Asia to a North American audience.” The film will star Constance Wu, Nick Young, and Michelle Yeoh, among many other Asian actors. It is set for release on August 17.

  17. The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
  18. Based on the New York Times best-selling novel of the same name, the story follows sixteen-year-old Starr Carter, a black high school student who witnessed a white police officer shooting her unarmed best friend. Carter is torn between two worlds: her black neighborhood and the suburban prep school that she attends. Amanda Stenberg leads the cast as Starr Carter and stars alongside Lamar Johnson, Algee Smith Anthony Mackie, and Common. There is no final release date yet.

  19. Dumplin’ by Julie Murphy
  20. This upcoming musical comedy tells the story of Willowdean “Dumplin’” Dickson, an overweight teenager who’s comfortable in her body and who proves that she has a place in the spotlight by joining a beauty pageant. Through this experience, she realizes that she had more insecurities than she thought. The cast includes Danielle Macdonald, Jennifer Aniston, Luke Benward, Dove Cameron, and Ginger Minj. There is no final release date yet.
